I think that this book is absolutely phenomenal. Jennette McCurdy has such a gift for storytelling, and it was only elevated with her narration of the audiobook.
I think she did such a wonderful job at capturing the toxic relationship that one can have with an emotionally abusive parent. Everything they say and do to you, they convince you that it’s for your own good. The moment that hit hardest for me was when she was speaking to a therapist and her therapist was trying to get her to realize that her relationship with her mother wasn’t healthy, and Jennette’s immediate response was denial. Up until that point, we as readers understood how unhealthy that mother-daughter relationship was, but even though this is the story of our narrator, she never explicitly states at any point that her mother was abusive, so that scene really struck me.
Overall, this was very different from other memoirs and autobiographies that I’ve read. At each stage in Jennette’s life, she had a distinct voice, and I don’t just mean in terms of narration. When she told the story of her childhood, I felt like I was reading from a child’s perspective. When she told the story of her Nickelodeon days, I could feel that particular type of anxiety that most teenagers have. When she caught us up to her life now, I felt like I was speaking to an adult who had finally started to come into her own.
It’s such an emotional, yet fascinating read - I would highly recommend everyone read it!

A nuanced exploration of parental abuse, eating disorder, addiction, and child stardom.
Inspiring narrative even as it refuses a neat happy ending, or actually because of it.
Poignant audiobook narration from the author.
