Picture book telling a story about what all feelings do when no one's looking. The book is so heartwarming that telling us all the feeling matter and all of them are inside us.

The illustrations were so beautiful and quirky. Some of the writing was more well done than other bits, and I wish every line was as strong as the best ones within, but I think this falls to translation. I’m sure that when read in Polish, the language would lend itself to the shorter more brisk sentences. Still brimming with beautiful and relatable sentiments. A gorgeous picture book.

Wonderful picture book with awesome illustrations. I love a good with monsters and inner emotions. What I love the most about this one is that it doesn't focus only on positive feelings or negative ones. There is a good balance and they are all whimsical. For example: "Insecurities build cages." and "Trust builds bridges." ... Right?
Right to the point.

Some children’s books have the surprising ability to speak to adults, sometimes more profoundly than they do to kids. What Feelings Do When No One’s Looking is one.

Each feeling is allotted a two-page spread. The illustrations are minimalistic, and the writing mostly consists of one-liners.

The muted, desaturated, grey-heavy tones of the illustrations create a grounding, neutral space for children to confront their own feelings, some of which can be turbulent.

What the feelings are up to are sometimes very standard expressions (joy bounces, shame hides, anger is explosive…) yet each of them convey the feelings spot-on. Some others are even more insightful, even for adults: Insecurities build cages. Fear pretends it isn’t there. These simple statements make you pause and ponder.

I neither have kids nor work with them (just love picking up a children’s book sometimes, for they can be powerful — as is the case here) so I went through other reviews a bit to get an idea. It seems this is a book that can be used by pedagogy professionals to help children make sense of their feelings, a tool that can be used by parents or other legal guardians for this purpose as well.

I enjoyed the minute or two it took me to go through the book. The illustrations are endearing and the writing is very heartwarming.

Thank you to NetGalley and Elsewhere Editions for the DRC!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This graphic novel uses visual depictions to explain feelings. I really like the art style and the way each feeling was represented. It was such a sweet and simple read. I’d recommend this book to parents/guardians and schools to help children better understand emotions.

What an absolutely lovely & thoughtful book.  This book has such a creative way of thinking about the feelings that everyone experiences.  It will be a great starting place for families and classes to talk about feelings, what they are like and how they feel.  It could also be a great jumping off place for children to imagine and create art about their own feelings.   Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest opinion.
