I accidentally got sent the second book instead of the first book, so I read Dark Fangs Raging by C. Thomas Lafollette before Dark Fangs Rising.

I did finish it anyway, as it was a rather good book, even if it does not work as a stand alone - it's decidedly a book two.

As is, there's plenty of moments that reference things that happened in the past, characters enter with no introduction as you're supposed to know them already, and the plot starts in the middle of something you've no clue about.

I think if I had actually started with the first, I'd have enjoyed this a lot more. For my personal taste there were too many pure fight scenes and firearms, when I would have liked some more magic (or werewolf action) and actual plot instead of just shoot outs. I know other people prefer those though, so that's a matter of taste.

The main strength for me was the inclusive cast and LGBTQIA+ positive pack. I loved how the strong men are allowed to have a melt down or cry, and not be judged for it. The team bond and support was a joy to read.
Not all of it worked perfectly for me, but I liked that it was simply a normal part of the characters and not a big deal.

I liked it enough to probably read later books in the series, hoping they get smoothed out even more, as I'm always looking for more Urban Fantasy!
