I laughed, cried, and cried some more…I absolutely love this book. It is beautiful, healing, and so incredibly moving.

I really wanted to like this story more. What I did like: the beautiful art and visual storytelling! The ideas and world presented were unique and fascinating. Studying the history of the (all lesbian?!) Universe, space construction workers,  interplanetary education. That's why it was so frustrating finding that all these concepts were surface level. With the outlines of a rich world offered here, I really expect a high fantasy level of storytelling. I wanted to know so much more about everything. When I did find out more, like about Ell's past and the Staircase, it still felt half baked. I found myself not really caring about the characters and didn't really get their motivations. I mean, I got it but I didn't buy it. The historical preservation space traveling thing was so interesting but I feel like I still didn't really understand the point of it. I needed more background woven into the story. Still want to read some of Walden's other works. The art and visual pacing is their strength and was well worth the read.

THIS WAS SO SPECIAL. I love everything Walden does, of course, but like — found family, growth, queerness, intrigue, what more could you want? And good god the art is fucking gorgeous. Loved it.

FOUND A NEW COMFORT FAVE. (4.5 stars rounded up)

The art style and colors are absolutely GOREGEOUS in this book. Reading this legit felt like I was watching a ghibli movie.
I fell in love with all the characters. Char and Alma are such a sweet couple. (I SHIP THEM SO HARD) Also has a nonbinary character for those who are looking for books/media with them.

I will admit I did have a hard time telling the ages apart between characters, especially at the beginning. Didn't bother me much by the end.
