This was one of my most anticipated books as the premise of this book sounded interesting but it took a whole different turn and not a good one. Pizza girl is one of those small books that are simultaneously boring yet I couldn’t put it down in hopes it would somehow redeem itself.
It didn’t.
She cheats on her boyfriend, Billy, and uses her mommy issues as an excuse. She drinks when pregnant and it’s blamed on her alcoholic dead father. She’s shitty towards her mother, albeit whom can come across a smidge overbearing and blissfully unaware of the impact her alcoholic husband had on their family, whilst supporting her teenage pregnancy. At times it felt like her boyfriend and her mum were almost like a couple themselves which was extremely odd. I understand them both falling asleep out of exhaustion over worrying about her whereabouts, but them falling asleep on each other in a couple-y way freaked me out. That being said, not another excuse for her to cheat. Pizza girl’s bisexuality was framed as an excuse to cheat on her partner which is an inherently harmful portrayal of bisexuality.
I felt bad for Jenny’s kid, Adam, as he was being emotionally and physically neglected by both of his parents. He was left with pizza girl, a complete stranger (to him) overnight. Admittedly, Jenny is super weird for befriending a teenager and kissing her back. Especially when she’s married and cheating on her husband too. Like what the fuck. I don’t think there was a single redeeming factor about this book. I don’t understand why everyone in the bookstagram community is raving about it? Is it just for shock value? Is it because it was an absolute train wreck of mist-mashed crap shoved into a novella? The content especially towards the last hour and a half (of the audiobook) was just utterly confusing. Why the fuck does Billy have a gun? Why is he ominously threatening to use it on Pizza Girl and himself? Why did pizza girl stalk and break into Jenny’s house with a gun and almost murder them and herself? The fuck. What is up with the epilogue? Her mother trying to make Pizza girl sound sophisticated and philosophical and just glossing over that she should take accountability of her actions and not deflect blame. This girl is delulu and in a major psychiatric way.
Thus, I rate this 1.5 stars. I’m honestly so confused as to whether I hate this book or not. 1/2 a star for the cute front cover, 1/2 a star for the occasional metaphor or analogy I liked and 1/2 a star because whilst it was an absolute shit-show I needed to know what happened. That being said, it was an absolute waste of 5 and a half hours. Like I’m sorry but are we meant to be rooting for an extremely shitty and problematic main character? Like give Pizza Girl some therapy, and take away the baby that she can’t even look after properly whilst it’s in her womb let alone after being born. Also if she hates the baby so much, why not get an abortion? I know Jesus and the church is mentioned briefly about half way through in regards to admiring stained glass windows and going to a support group hosted within a church, whether that is a part of her faith, it is not mentioned (at least I don’t recall); but if that were the case, she could still have looked after her baby by not drinking and fucking it up and then giving the baby away for adoption. Also low key, I’m so concerned for the author because how on earth does someone’s brain spurt this and come up with the most concerning plot line. Girlipop also needs therapy.
