My New Years resolution is to read the entire OZ series of books.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an enjoyable read, even though the book is 119 years old and the film that is based on it reaches 80 this year. The two are similar and different all at the same time. This reads like a children's book, and has simple text that all children would enjoy. There is some violence, but no more than what is on television today for children, and nothing graphic. Heads are chopped off of wolves and there are scarier scenes involving spiders, which are nice characters, and winger monkeys, which are servants of a magical hat.
The story is different enough that even having seen the film at least 50 times, this book had me guessing what would happen next, because things do not happen the same way nor in the same order. Eventually, I feel like someone would make the book into a closer to the tale movie, and I would love for someone to do this without having the money heads in Hollywood trying to make the story into something it is not.
On towards book 2, the Marvelous Wizard of Oz.

Llevo obsesionada con El mago de Oz desde que conocí a Judy Garland así que sí o sí tenía que leerlo algún día. Me compré una muñeca de Dorothy así que dijee es el momento para leerme toda la saga.
Realmente es lo que esperaba de un clásico infantil, los capítulos son cortísimos y son como mini aventuras que tienen los personajes para llegar a su objetivo. Me encanta porque los personajes me inspiran mucha inocencia. Algo que me sorprendió es lo extrañamente explícitos que son al momento de relatar las muertes(? de algunos enemigos pero no sé si es porque ya lo leo con una mentalidad adulta.
Debo admitir que los elementos que le agregaron a la película icónica hace la historia mucho mejor. El más claro dato que puedo mencionar es lo que les da Oz como premio por haber derrotado a la bruja. Es que en la película les dan un reloj en forma de corazón, un diploma que representa la inteligencia y una medalla que representa la valentía y es que creo que tiene mucho más sentido que lo que les dan en el libro. Otra cosa, sabía que los zapatos eran de otro color en el libro pero no puedo imaginar a Dorothy sin sus icónicos zapatos rojos. Incluso los diálogos, tengo tan metidos muchos diálogos de la película que me llevé un poco de decepción al momento de no encontrarlos en el libro. Entiendo que soy completamente subjetiva en ese aspecto.
Creo que la debilidad del libro es que justamente después de conseguir el objetivo de los amigos de Dorothy siento que narrativamente la novela se queda sin rumbo. Es decir, se encuentran yendo a ver a Glinda y conocen ciertos lugares pero es que sentí este tramo como si fuera relleno. Todo este recorrido se corta en la película y tiene demasiado sentido porque se estaba alargando más de lo necesario.
Definitivamente lo volvería a leer, porque es de los libros/películas con los que más me identifico. Siempre termino volviendo a la película y a sus canciones.
