“Fire becomes her” has such a unique and interesting plot line. I liked the characters even some of them who weren’t meant to be liked. There was a point where it got a little tedious and there was no real twist but I liked the ending and the length of the book was reasonable.

Queer found family and eat the rich vibes and just... my heart is bursting. Thor's second novel is sumptuous, a tale that rages from start to finish You don't want to miss this ragtag bunch of misfits, or Thor's gentle exploration of identity, self-discovery, and love in all its forms.

A really quick and easy read. Thor manages to create a believable fantasy backdrop that leaves space for the political intrigue in the forefront. The moral/objectives/lessons from the story were obvious but didn’t take away from the charm of the story.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The pacing was great, the premise of "flare magic" as currency was really compelling, a the parallels to contemporary politics of income inequality were well executed. I will say I found some of the interpersonal dynamics felt a bit stilted, but appreciated the effort to present a variety of forms of love and friendship and family.

I enjoyed this book, but this may turn into a long review as I also have many thoughts about this book. I'll try to be succinct as possible.

I loved the premise of this book: magic as literal currency but it's still magic. The exploration of political systems and corruption, and the Eat the Rich vibes. The themes were solid, and would be mind-blowing to my past teenage self.

I enjoyed the character work as well, particularly the main character. However, I felt that sometimes her mindset shifted too quickly on page, and it caused me something like mental whiplash. The important side characters were well developed, but the others faded into the background to the point I couldn't remember who was who.

The magic system was completely ignored in favor of the political system. When we got into a bit about how the magic was distilled (as in this world you consume the magic before you use it), it became so jargon-y that I still had no idea how anything worked.

The plot was very superficial, for lack of a better word (and obvious, but it usually always is for me).

Ultimately, I feel like this book was trying to be character-driven, but overbalanced with a lackluster plot, creating a story that would be about introspection one chapter, and then the political race the next chapter. I will also say the same about the characters; it focused on the MC and those around her, to the detriment of some of the other side characters. This book just needed more balance.

But, make no mistake, I did really enjoy this book. It made me laugh, it made me smile, and I loved the exploration of identity that it took me on.

Bounced off this the first time I read it, but got more into it on time two. That said... this is kind of a mess. Doesn't really develop the relationships the way it needs to, I don't think.
