Definitely not my favorite by this author. I don't know if I'd want to continue on with the series or not.

When I started it, it was slightly slow to me and I had to transfix myself into remembering that Cassel Sharpe's world, and the worker's world, consisted of EVERYONE wearing gloves.
And considering that I've never EVER read a book like this one- like mobsters and all that jazz- I really enjoyed something new. It's shocking that this book trilogy isn't very popular.
Other than that, I really liked it.

I liked the mystery of what really happened to Lila and how Cassel believes that he is not a worker when in truth he is. He's a rare worker that doesn't always show up in the worker world.

Holly does it again. what a really cool story! There is controversial magic in people's hands, so everyone wears gloves. This story has a con artist, a few curse workers of different varieties--you know, death, memory, luck, emotion. That sort of thing. And a young man, Cassel, who remembers killing the girl he loved, and how his brothers covered up for him. But, all the strange happenings and relationships in Cassel's life have to be addressed after he wakes up in the middle of the night on the steeply slanted roof of his school dorm. as if that weren't weird enough, things go much more bizarre from there.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked that it was a whole different idea. This book had the mystique of the otherworld, but had curse workers. Curse worker are people that have powers of either luck, emotions, death, or transformation.
I like the way that Holly Black entwines her world with the current world. It is like you are reading about things that could be going on now or that are going on in an alternate universe. She uses evens that have happened in history and shaped them to fit in this cure worker world.
Some of the story lines were a little underdeveloped. However I feel that things will be better explained or become clearer in the second book. You can't give it all away at the beginning of a series. I would recommend this to others...I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to Red Glove.

2019: This was a lot more complicated of a story than I remembered. It is more predictable this time around; however, the premise still is phenomenal.
2015: I like Holly Black's writing style. she can definitely write a modern setting with magic in it. this one had con-men, curses and cats which made this tale enjoyable. slight predictability however

This is a bit more towards horror than I usually read. But I really enjoyed this book. Right from the beginning I was hooked in the mystery. The integration of magic into the real world is well done and I found the world build engrossing. The characters are very shady and the reliability of the narrator is questionable. But I really enjoyed the interplay between the characters and the relationships they build.
