A fantastic novel of high fantasy - particularly for people like me who really don't like high fantasy. Martin's world is so epic, so gripping, so gritty, and so steeped in reality that it's hard to get bored. What's more, he avoids so many of the cliches of the genre that make his colleagues so impossible to read.

One warning to fans of the show - aside from some illuminating details here and there, the producers and writers kept studiously close to the text, so don't expect a single surprise. Just enjoy Martin's superb prose on your way to try to get A Clash of Kings ready before the new season starts.

It was good but there’s some phrases that were just over used (not just family mottos like ‘winter is coming’) and I feel like it was a bit lazy.

This book is a perfect introduction to fantasy if it’s not your favourite genre. At this introductory stage, it’s a political game, a murder mystery, and medieval kingdom on the brink of war.

The switch between characters, their corresponding locations, and journeys set a differing pace throughout the book. I find i read the Daenerys’s chapters slowly, taking in the ‘exotic’ world building George does wonderfully. This is a 10/10 read and i’ve read it twice now.
