One of the few mandatory university readings that i genuinely enjoyed. i read it in german and Keuns writing style really invites you to see 1930s Germany, a very tumultuous time, through the eyes of a young (somewhat naive) Woman. really had me choked up in places because, man she is just like me in some ways. really recontextualized a lot of stuff i learned about the Weimar Republic in School and through other media.

A romp filled with humor and contemplation. Doris goes where the wind takes her-from her ambitions to be an actress to trying to find love and a place in the world. Doris herself is a freewheeling type girl who is kind of a scamp, going where she pleases, stealing what she likes and opening her heart to whoever deserves it. She runs into a lot of obstacles, hunger, and the occasional worthy friend or lover. But the amazing thing is that despite all the setbacks and standstills, she keeps going, even when her next meal or a place to sleep isn't a guarantee. She's free in a way that is admirable, if not at least a little dangerous. But I wish I had a percentage of her verve.
