A pretty grim tale of survival sex + a need for human affection + hard times everywhere. Not sure I got a whole lot out of this book, but it had its moments.

Reading this was like listening to some telling you the story of her life with no pauses for breath. It's a complete contrast to christopher isherwood'so Berlin though.

This hit me. The train-of-thought style worked really well and highlighted the main characters lies and contradictions beautifully.

It also felt like a unique time capsule. It's almost hard for me to believe because to some extent I think we get a "sanitised" and more straightforward, linear, version of history in textbooks and the fact that this has erased the experiences of people like this protagonist is very upsetting to think about.

What huge collection of narratives have we missed out on because of various systems of oppression which have dictated who's story gets to be heard?

It wasn’t really my style but was interesting to read a contemporary 30’s novel
