Truly Madly Guilty

Liane Moriarty

I guess i don't enjoy the feeling of being manipulated by an author. The first half alternates between the day of lead up and months later aftermath of some pivotal event that the reader is ignorant of. After the big reveal, I liked the book well enough - interesting characters in an interesting situation.

Liane Moriarty has the unique ability to turn something so mundane into a brilliant piece of literature. This is no different with Truly Madly Guilty. With razor sharp precision, Liane tells the story of three separate families as they overcome and try to make sense of “what happened at the barbecue”. Families will change, lives will forever be altered, and friendships will be tested. All the while, readers will be playing guessing games as to what is going on, and when they find out, they will be baffled. I loved the dark atmospheric edges to this story, and when we find out EXACTLY what happened, readers will feel a sense of compassion and dread just as I did. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading Moriarty’s brilliantly twisted reads, then you need to get on the bandwagon! She is one of the most unique authors I have ever come across and every time I pick up one of her novels I am sucked in until the very end.

I am going to keep this review short and sweet as this is one of those novels that you just have to read for yourself otherwise it will just ruin the story. But as I said before, Moriarty’s novels have the ability to suck you in and consume you from beginning to end so make sure to set up some time where you can really read and concentrate on this one. It is very twisty but will NOT confuse you in the slightest. It is effective, brilliant, and blends the darker side of human nature while also being quite light. And of course, I highly recommend reading this novel! Especially for those who are looking for something extremely unique!

I love Moriarty’s books but I think this one may be my least favorite. None of the characters were that likable and the plot was on the slower side.

first read of 2025! i love liane moriarty but this wasn’t my favorite. i liked the characters and the buildup to the main event but once i got there i was so underwhelmed. i did appreciate the side plots and her writing is always fantastic so it wasn’t a complete waste

This book took me a little to get into but once I did it was great! I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed how it went back and fourth from the present to the past, it keeps you on your toes!
