Good not great. I like the writing and the characters but it was too much. I wasn’t annoyed by the slow reveal of what happened at the barbecue and I didn’t think they tried to make it too dramatic than it needed to be. Just fine but on the good side of fine.
This book peaked at mediocrity for me. The author spends almost 300 pages of the book building the plot of a "mystery" tragedy that drastically impacted all characters while at a barbecue. When this tragedy was finally revealed it was a disappointing let-down that should have been taken further by the author. This book was not balanced with plot development versus resolution. The last 50 pages of the book were pleasant--which is why it earned 2 stars instead of the 1 I had planned on giving. The best analogy I can use to describe this book is waiting in a dreadful 3 hour line to ride a disappointing roller coaster that is over in mere seconds. Do yourself a favor and leave this one on the shelf.

Exactly what you'd expect a Liane Moriarty book to be - easy, fun summer read. Not her best but l love how reliable her books are.
My first-ever Liane Moriarty novel! I loved this compelling modern drama about friends and family. Moriarty builds such delicious tension into this novel right from the first pages and draws the suspense out, making it a very compelling read with real-feeling characters. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3. Talk about a long, drawn out story! I guess I don’t do well with a book where an event is referenced and it takes forever to get to what actually happened at said event. For me, it wasn’t suspenseful. It was annoying and tedious. To make matters worse you figure out what happened and you think ok good we’re getting to the end. NOPE the story continues to drone on for several more hours (I listened to the audiobook). I honestly think I’m just not a fan of Liane Moriarty’s writing. Her characters tend to be unbelievable and unlikable. I already purchased Nine Perfect Strangers from Audible, so I will listen to it but my expectations are low.
