I’m in love with what I just read!
Yes, some details about Sam and Dean were different from Supernatural but I guess a book based on a tv show can’t be 100% accurate and perfect and the details are really small ones so that’s okay.

What I really loved is how Dean was protecting Sam. Because yeah Dean is protecting Sam. But the author still showed that Sam himself protected Dean. I enjoyed how both brothers are protecting each other in their own way.

I think the different pov (still 3rd person pov) are useful and were well-used and well-written. I fully understood what was going on in the story thanks to that so they were important for me. In a tv show we can see what’s going on but in a book we need some descriptions to understand so it was really useful! I guess with only Sam and Dean’s pov we wouldn’t have understood everything.

The annoying point was the excessive mention of John Winchester. I mean, we can mention him and explain who he is if there’s people reading the book without watching the show but even for them I think mentioning him only one time would’ve been enough.
Otherwise I really liked the story!

I love how Bobby was introduced and how Dean’s fear of airplane was still used. I also really liked how the exorcism was written. By writing the whole exorcism we can definitely imagine how the demon reacts and when, just like when we’re watching the show (:

I think the book can’t be a perfect reproduction of the tv show so I don’t have high expectations. For me the story was well-written and I really like to be able to read a physical book about Sam and Dean and not only watching them.

this was disappointing.

at least half the book wasn’t from the perspective of either of the winchester but rather random people or victims.

the known characters were not very on brand either, again especially dean and how he was treated and seen as dumb was once again a main thing in this book.

this book was also extreme in overly sexualizing women in all ways. particularly in unnecessary ways. for example giving more then one character in this one book the need to photograph or film women without their knowing and sharing those images -again without their knowledge because it boosts the mens egos. wow thanks was that necessary or something that would be shown as something normal in SPN? no. why include it in this book? no idea.

also the constant mention of anyone with breast and them being described in ways that was just… yuck.
like when a guy is literally getting the life sucked out of him - good that he focuses on the woman that’s with him and is also currently being killed how her „boobs were sagging“ (direct quote).
clearly the thing to note while dying and watching someone die before you.

or how Dean immediately identifies a female that he finds killed by seeing her „doe eyes that were now starting blankly at the ceiling to her great legs“ (again direct quote)
look deans a serial dater, a flirt and a charmer but he also knows when that’s appropriate and when it’s not. i can’t remember one moment from the show where Dean was himself and behaved overly sexualized towards anybody when the situation was uncalled for.
so i find it very out of character for Dean to supposed to note the great legs on a body when he already identified the woman by her face.

this author can NOT write Dean well. at all.
i am sorry. it be can’t.
Deans behavior is so OOC (out of character) it’s not even funny anymore.

can i also just ask why the heck the author kept saying the „military training from john kicked in“ whenever the boys are in a hunting situation.
or that John and Dean hunted together the entire time while Sam was at stanford?
we know that’s untrue from the first episode!
the unnecessary need of the author to keep bringing up John winchester for no real reason is something i just don’t get.
the two books from this series by this particular author feel like the talked more about John than the actual character was shown and mentioned in the entirety of the series!
and for no good reason either?
very strange to me.

the book itself is not bad.
it’s not good.
but it’s not horrible.
and the case isn’t bad either.
but the constantly switching POVs and the other maybe small but noticeable things that bothered me throughout the story didn’t make this an overly enjoyable read either.

look i know writing is hard and especially fanfiction writing (which this is let’s not kid ourself! the guy gets paid for having written a published fanfic!) is not easy. i know that o am in those circles.
it’s hard to find the right balance of telling a new plot but perfectly represents beloved and well known characters.
but this author? he’s not the best author for this series.
he doesn’t write the sibling relationship between the boys in the way it’s portrayed, Dean is a blond air head stereotyp if he’s not needed to solve something completely of the blue, Sam -whole certainly and especially in the early seasons is a bit on the spoiled side- isn’t so bad that he would actually think that he should save Dean if nothing else because Dean is the one of the two of them that can hustle up money for them. (because yes that’s an actual line from the book too! where Sam speculates about how he has no marketable skills and needs to save dean because he’s the “breadwinner” of the two of them 👍)

i don’t know how many more books from this series this particular author wrote but i can’t say i am looking forwards to them.

the people that wanted this book series to exist could have EASILY found a better author for this particular series than this one. that’s what’s pretty frustrating to me. because the author isn’t a horrible writer. i think i’m the right story he would be a good maybe even a great author. but he just can’t get the characters write for this series. and for a character based series that’s just… that doesn’t work!

so if you are a die hard fan?
wouldn’t recommend this if you don’t want a frustrating read.

but if you just want something entertaining and don’t really care about what characters are supposed to be like?
i guess go for it?
