I liked the mixing of modern feminism and traditional culture. It had lots of detail about Ugandan culture and traditions in the 1900s from Kirabo’s grandmother and her own experience. The only part I didn’t like was that she planned to marry Sio which contradicted the whole feminism plotline.

I really wanted to love it, but the narration felt disconnected somehow, with stories within stories, and I struggled to follow. I found it hard to figure out what was important.

This novel, set in Uganda, is told from an young girl named Kirabo’s perspective. Her narration was affecting, the setting was engrossing, and the plot unique. It started to drag on a bit at the end, and at times it felt like the main point of the plot kept changing. Yet I still really enjoyed this book and was rooting for the characters the entire way.
