Lacks the heart that makes the original Pillars of the Earth so gripping. The plot is very motivated by the historical events and politics of the time, rather than the characters. I didn't sympathize with or particularly care about anyone and thought their stories and relationships were severely underdeveloped. Too much focus on the setting and background events; it almost felt like the book version of those documentaries with the historical reenactment scenes.

I’ve read all of the books in the Kingsbridge series, and this being the last one I found that Follett tends to use the same character concepts adapted to the different eras. I cannot say it is a predictable book, because it is not, but the fact that it follows the exact pattern of all the others makes it slightly less exciting. Over all this is a great end to the series, it does have its faults, since it seems that Follett kind of gives up on some characters in the end such as Hornbeam. I am kind of sad that this is the end, because I always looked forward to the next historical era, even though the characters are kind of the same Folletts writing makes you really connect to their pains and hardships. Loved it. Wished there were less long paragraphs on the way cloth machines worked, it gets kind of boring and confusing.
Apparently a book can't be successful in the 2020s without including homosexuals. I've never had an issue with people's private lives, but I have zero interest in reading about it.
