I'll be honest, I didn't have any intentions of reading a Jodi Picoult book but I'm glad this was recommended. The main character, Jacob, is a teenager who has Asperger's Syndrome who is obsessed with crimes and solving them. Jodi did her homework before writing this book and does an excellent job educating about AS. I gave this book 4 stars because I believe the first half of the book is a little slow. But once you hit that mark that it gets good, man is it hard to put down. If you're looking for a light, easy read, psychological thriller/murder mystery, this book is the one!
a sweet touching story (but still with a case of death person in it)

This one was hard for me to rate. I'm used to picking up a Jodi Picoult book and having to tear myself away. This one was not like that. I didn't dread it, but it was easy to say 'time for bed' and put it down; hence, it took and entire week for me to finish. It picked up after the first 200 pages or so, and got a lot more interesting. It just wasn't to me, typical Jodi Picoult. Realize though, that Jodi at her worst is better than most authors at their best. Let's give it 3 out of 5.
The book was interesting; the story of an Aspergers 'child', a senior in HS. His mom is a single parent after dad bailed early on. She also has a 15 year old, who is stuck in the role of 'big brother'. Asperger's kids are very intelligent, but missing some 'social' filters in the brain. The don't 'feel' the same way most people do, but are aware of this, and WANT to fit in with other. They WANT to be social, but can't figure out the 'rules'.
In this story, a 'social tutor' is hired to help Jacob learn social cues. She is a grad student, and is later found dead. Jacob is arrested for the murder. His mother hires a newby lawyer. The story is good, though I have to say, it ended exactly the way I thought it would as soon as she was discovered dead. That probably is a first for me, too. I usually can't predict how Jodi's stories will end.
The only thing I will say is a felt like a lot of 'loose end's' were left. Nothing really significant to the main story, but things I would have liked to know.
(Don't read any further if you plan to read the book. These could be 'spoilers')
Like, what happened with Emma and Oliver? Did the relationship end...grow..
Did Henry come back into the picture? Did his daughters get to know Theo and Jacob?

slow-paced
Maybe it’s because I have a lot of experience with Autism but I felt the author spent to much time setting up plots and explaining things and it took forever to get intresting. One of my least favorite Jodi Picoult books honestly
Read this on my spring break trip and loved it. Interesting perspective of both a young adult with aspergers but also the perspectives of those in his family.
Didnt like the ending

we should have at least been told the verdict. Did I miss it and dont know it? Great book, though.

By far my favorite book by her and one of the titles I'll recommend if a friend is looking to read something.
If this book had been written by someone else I might have given it 4 stars. But Picoult’s reputation for the endings of books made it disappointing since the WHOLE BOOK WAS PREDICTABLE.
The twist at the end of Picoult's books are a crapshoot of emotions for me. House rules is not an exception.
