The second part of a trilogy about memory and legacy in war-torn families, Scorched is a hefty read, but feels true to the events Mouawad is dramatizing. The Lebanese civil war from the 1970s into the 1980s contained many atrocities, as well as the descent of citizens into thuggery. So while the language and seriousness of the piece can seem like they're bogging you down as a reader, they're actually capturing a feeling about past events in history. The best example of this is a stunning, angry scene in which two women debate the purpose of trying to live their lives in the face of the "monumental machine" that is crushing them: war.
While its descent into Greek tragedy may seem a little forced to the reader, its enaction on stage is not. The play flies by, and the density of Mouawad's metaphors concerning fire, water and steel becomes transparent. I plan to track down more of this author's work, as his strange poetics and polemics are entirely captivating.
