Sometimes theater moves me. Sometimes it surprises me. And still other times it makes me cry. Scorched did all of those things, but more importantly, it shocked me. It left me speechless and kept me up late several nights.
I first learned about the text when I was asked to play young Nawal in a scene for a directing class. I learned the Arabic alphabet, ran the scene, and thought very little about the play after. Two years later, I was asked to work on another scene for the show, playing Nihad in the first scene he is introduced. Naturally, the material surprised me and pushed me to do some of the most challenging and complex work I've done as an actress.
A few days after finishing that project, I managed to get my hands on a copy of the complete play and devoured it. Mouawad's work is so beautiful, so bitter and sweet and painful... I couldn't sleep the night after I finished it. This is one to go back to.
