inspiring/inspired

i have so many things to say about this book, but the main one is that it inspired me to write something that would grip and challenge people the way this did.
i vacillated constantly between thinking i knew exactly what was going on to being completely flummoxed and loving the mystery of it all. i DEFINITELY did not predict the sudden switch in the middle, nor did i expect any of the events leading up to it.
i was completely charmed by all of the characters and by turns rooting for them and also for the antagonist (i can’t bring myself to say “villain” because what mother wouldn’t?) to win in the end.
i loved the end, how it all wove together so perfectly, and i loved the little tidbits of foreshadowing throughout that only became clear after i read all of it. my favourite nod to genre fans was Finals Girl probably, though the whole love of fantasy books and stuff in the beginning was pretty fun and relatable, too.
anyway, i probably could analyze this book to death, write a whole thesis paper on it and monster theory and still not exhaust all of my theories and ideas and sudden a-ha moments. i loved it and HIGHLY recommend it for anyone. everyone. go read it.

As far as horror goes, this goes down as one of my favorites.

I will never look at elk the same way again.

This book was much easier to get through when I listened to an audiobook version of it. In print it was personally hard for me to read because of how much would be happening in the action scenes and also some of the terminology used.
