I went into this book not know at all what to expect and I do feel like that made it so much better. It was an amazing story about a girl reconnecting with her father and finding herself and something else unexpected along the way.

I laughed, cried, and covered my face more times than I could count.

Calla Fletcher knows close to nothing about Alaska. It's cold, barren (according to her mother), and her estranged father lives there. She is more than happy to live her busy life in Toronto, but when she gets the call that Wren Fletcher, her father, is dying, it's now or never to go and face Alaska and the life she almost had.

Alaskan Wild life is already hard enough, but throw in a dying father, a foreign town, and a growly burly man who's rude? Nothing about the trip is going to be easy for Calla.

I originally read this book in 2021 and loved it, so when I started my journey of listening to audiobooks as a means to reexperience books I love, this was definitely on that priority list.

There's something so hot about a burly, kinda rude (but mostly guarded), moody, protective man in a romance book. Jonah is absolutely swoony. Right off the bat? He's a little shit, and I LOVE it. Calla comes into town with a big personality and walls high af. The transition of bickering, to friendship, to lovers was perfection. They balanced each other so well, and were definitely designed to put up with each other's shit. The chemistry was fantastic. The inevitable end, when Calla has to leave Alaska is the big strain between them, but the connection is worth risking broken hearts. I love the way K.A.T resolved this, it gives us the perfect segue into the rest of the series.

This is one of those books that just captures your heart and doesn't let go. The characters in this have the best growth and development, and that alone is enough to give it 5 stars. Calla's relationship with her father was definitely the focus of the plot of this book. We get to see how both her and Wren break through that initial awkwardness and uncomfortable moments and really embrace that father/daughter relationship they never had. We get to see how the entire town makes an impact on this relationship too, and how Wild is really a big family. By the last chunk of this book, I was sobbing . I knew what was going to happen, but my heart didn't stand a chance. The narrators for this audiobook really got me.

This book is perfect if you're a fan of It Happened One Summer. Calla and Piper, and Jonah and Brendan are different sides of the same coins. The Simple Wild brings the emotion, heart, and cozy vibes to this type of story. Alaska was already on my bucket list, but this book brought it to life for me. K.A. Tucker sucks you into this little town and shows you exactly why Calla and all the people that live here love it so much.

I am so excited to continue listening to this series.

-5 stars

I really wanted to like this book. I think the premise is interesting, but I fell flat for me.

I feel like the storyline for relationship between Calla and Wren was weak and should have been more of a focus. I hate that her character was made to feel guilty about her feelings and was never able to actually express how she felt by being abandoned by her father. Sure Wren's community may love him, but she has 24 years of abandonment issues to work through. Are we are supposed to believe she just forgives him in a few days?

I also dislike Jonah. There was a lot of toxic masculinity and a lack of compassion for Calla. I hate how he makes her feel bad about her relationship with her father like it is her fault. I also dislike all the references about how she "looks better without makeup" and how that is such a major focus. Yes, Calla is concerned with her appearance, but maybe that makeup makes her feel good about herself, maybe it's her armour. ALSO, hiding her suitcases and all her toiletries? Who does that. That is not cute or funny at all.

I gave it a 2.5 because I enjoyed the supporting characters and the description of the landscape.

Fun setting in Alaska and enemies to lovers romance. Male lead was not my favorite and kind of annoyed me. I’m trying to figure out how this turns into a series. Curious enough to keep reading to see. For me the setting is what made this book more than the romance.

Content notes: mostly clean other than about one chapter of open door, very little suggestive content overall and little language overall, cancer content

This read like one of Hallmark's winter movies and I ate it up. I came into it thinking it would be a regular contemporary romance, but it was truly so much more than that. It explored topics of grief, holding onto/letting go of grudges, separation from a parent, and lost time. I knew it was a special book when it got me thinking about my own relationships with my family and how they could be changed so that I didn't have any regrets.

The main character Calla is a somewhat spoiled 26 year old who is living a life without many responsibilities because of her family's financial stability and her caring mom and stepdad. Because of this, she doesn't at first seem like a character that we are going to like because she cares a lot about her appearance and is an up and coming influencer. But she's a relatable character, at the very least because all of us know a Calla (if we aren't one ourselves). A big part of the story is that Calla is introduced to the Wild and allows it to change her. She is a character that is able to change, which is a big draw to her likeability.

The author described the Wild as taking on a character of its own, and she's be so right. The Wild, and all that Alaska and that community entailed, is what I'll remember most vividly. I truly felt like for the duration of this novel, I was transported to a place I'd never been before and experiencing it all for the first time right alongside Calla.

Of course, the romance was great too. I did think that it happened a bit fast in that there was no romance and suddenly it was all there, all at once. BUT their banter was super cute and I vibed with it.
