adventurous informative slow-paced

I basically liked it. I came into this book barely knowing anything about Elon Musk. I have a friend who works for SpaceX and I wasn't even aware that he owned that company. I only knew about him in the context of Tesla. I didn't like the author's tone when I started this book but I think I got used to it. I can't tell if it's because it no longer shocked me how rude he was or if it reflects how the author himself came to change how he viewed Musk.

If you know as little as I did about Musk, which is probably pretty unlikely if you're considering reading this book at all and also since I live under a rock, then you might also be confused about how the author often switches from referring to people by their last name and then their first name. But I think Vance did a good job portraying a pretty complex person and trying to convey his force of personality and how his empire came to be.
informative inspiring tense medium-paced

A rich and nuanced biography of one of the most interesting man of our times. I learnt an enormous amount including some details of Musk's hard childhood which made him value the character transforming nature of "adversity"; the sheer scale of risks he took including almost going bankrupt in 2008 to save SpaceX and Tesla; I also had not realized the obstacles Musk faced from entrenched behemoths when he was trying to upend some of the central drivers of the economy. Bottom line: if you truly believe you can make a contribution to a field, then learn from the established experts but do not be overawed by them or be discouraged in thinking that all the interesting work has already been done!

3/5 of the book was wonderful whilst 1/5 of the book, as some of the other reviewers have remarked, seemed like a summary of various news articles about Elon Musk. However the concluding chapter including a discussion of Musk, the man and his relationships to his employees and family and his vision for the future was enthralling.

While it definitely changed my life in 2019 when I read it, I think that it would mislead the view on Musk's present doings. He has lived an inspiring life, facing and overcoming huge challenges early on and shifting the way humanity lives and will live in the future forever. Nevertheless, since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, he has done some things that - at least for me - are not acceptable and not inspiring anymore at all.

This was a very interesting look inside the mind of a very interesting guy. I had no idea the failures and growing pains Elon's companies had. He's a pretty tough guy to work for it seems, but he has a vision and I respect his desire to get it done. I don't think I could ever work for him, but I'm glad there are people that can, and that his visions are being chased with such veracity.

The world needs Tesla and Solar City to succeed. I'm also deeply interested in interplanetary spaceflight. Likely won't be complete in my lifetime or his, but he's setting up for some amazing progress in that area. I just hope that someone as passionate about it as him comes along and keeps it going.

Good stuff! Would recommend it for sure.

Loved it.

This is a great book about one of my heroes. Humans of his greatness come once a century.

این کتاب ۲۰۱۵ نوشته شده و اتفاقات بعد اون رو کاور نمیکنه.
اما از لحاظ شیوه روایت به طرز عجیبی از کتاب آیزاکسون بهتره.

I simultaneously have more respect and less respect for the man after reading the book so I guess it's a net zero. Some interesting insight into Musk that helps make sense of who he is today, but the book's drawn out in a way that makes me unsure if it was worth the read.

[Also, I don't like the way his face on the cover looks at me.]
