I ... I've been trying to figure out if graduate school is the reason it took me two months to finish this book or if the book was that bad ... In nearly every aspect, this book was not it.

Okay, its been months since I read this one and honestly I can't remember much about it now. I vaguely remember having a good time but sadly it wasn't memorable so I can't say much specifically.

I enjoyed this one less than I thought it would. Ngl, I was already skeptical considering who the main couple would be but I thought I’d give it a chance anyways. Don’t get me wrong- I’m not against interracial couples but for a romance like this- it’s really either a hit or miss and unfortunately for me, it was a miss

I did really like how there was representation for an India-born Indian in the book instead of the usual Indian-American in other books

The romance was ok until Nash started saying BS like “you’re in America. You have the freedom to choose.” It immediately made the entire romance sour for me

How can someone who seems so genuinely interested  in learning about Indian culture be so insensitive at the same time? Like sure it’s fine if you don’t completely understand it but maybe don’t comment on it like you’re in her shoes .Lowkey, he literally only seems to appreciate the food aspect and not the actual traditions and other aspects.  Also how can someone know so little about Indian culture while living in NYC in 2021??

And then for Kiran, i honestly don’t really know what she saw in him- he just seems like a dull character to me and without much of a  personality

Some other issues I had were the amount of stereotypes in the book, regarding the strictness in Indian culture and the poverty within the country. While I’m not Indian myself, I am Asian and have seen enough of the stereotypes painted about Asian culture in general . I also have an Indian friend who’s told me a lot about her culture

While I know some parts of India are still very traditional, this book made it seem like the entire  country was like that and it just felt off for me

I feel like a lot of opportunity was missed for this book
- An interracial couple with a PASSIONATE romance
-fighting cultural norms
-a book without all the stereotypes against South Asian culture (ESP India)

Very cute book and introduced / approached Indian Culture in a thoughtful and explanative way without hitting you over the head either. CUTE

A very sweet friends to lovers romance - yet takes the time to address so many societal topics.
Kiran has a close group of friends - who have a wish list. They have known each other for years - and provide a loving support group as well as humor for this book.
Upon her return from an outing, Kiran discovers Nash standing on the building stoop - a new tenant without keys. She lets Nash hangout while waiting for the landlord to provide assistance.
Right away Kiran's pride in herself and culture is very clear and present in the story. Which I loved. She does not back down throughout the story. The interaction between Nash, his friend's inability to say Kiran's name and Kiran was realistic, a glorious moment for Kiran to show her pride in self and culture was definitely an eye opening scene for the reader We take the ease of our name pronunciation for granted - not everyone lives this experience. Though I understood how hurtful it could be, this was an incredible experience for me - which no only will stay with me forever but also will encourage myself to be more respectful.
The dynamic between Nash and Kiran is a slow build - at times it could use more movement.
I enjoyed the realistic complication - the culture difference, Kiran's need to be a dutiful daughter.
I loved the multicultural element, the romance and realism.

I very much enjoyed it. It is a closed door romance though it the make out sessions do get descriptive. So of it was a bit cringe but for the most part it was very sweet and you really cared for the couple. The resolution was a bit too convenient but is definitely possible. They do a good job of humanizing all the characters which I love.

Okay it was a cute romance but there are a few things I really didn't like:

1. Kiran's parents being conservative and narrow-minded isn't "culture" because who's culture is that? Not mine for sure. Her parents just have a shitty way of thinking and it's not called "culture".
And I think Nash can criticize her parent's mindset because it is affecting him too in this case, he's not criticizing anyone's culture like be for real now.

2. Kiran's entire personality is being Indian and Nash just seems too unrealistic. I couldn't connect to them and their relationship much. I don't know why but I just didn't feel much passion between them.
