Just not very good. Whig history at its most surface level and asinine.

I like a book that does exactly what it sets out to do. Blood and Iron is a well-written story of the Second Reich and a very enlightening, concise history. Hoyer's writing is lively with a good balance: Not overly ornate, not too simple. It took me too long to read not because the book was boring, but because I simply couldn't focus. The actual time it took me to sit down and read through this wasn't actually that long, maybe 4-6 hours, maybe not even that long. If you need an introduction the the Second Reich, you shouldn't sleep on this.
