I really enjoyed this book! Yelena's character is really interesting, and I thought her traumatic backstory was really well handled. Maria V Snyder has written some really good characters in this - their personalities are presented really well, I just wish we could get a little more depth to them. We only really get a backstory for Yelena and it would be nice to be able to see more into the other character's histories (but maybe that is coming later in the series? I don't know).
Overall, this book was very exciting. I loved the storyline and the way it developed, and I also like the romantic aspect to the story. I'm definitely going to continue with this series.

Well. I finished it, so it gets more than a single star. The story is convoluted and the characters are one dimensional. The magic system is given no more than a paragraphs worth of explanation even though it is a significant part of the plot.
I won’t be reading any more of the series.

The side characters were well-written. I loved Ari and Janco, and Rand's arc was perfect. I do wish more had been done with Delena and Merin, and Margg just sort of disappeared after the visit to Star, but otherwise the Commander's staff were great characters. I like the little details added to Valen, too: the car Inga, the rocks and books, the loyalty to the Commander.
The concept of a food taster who used to be on death row is creative. The descriptions of some of the poisons and foods was interesting, as was the fugitive exercise--the camouflage and tree travel reminded me of The Hunger Games.
However, this book was so incredibly dark. So much detail was put into the torture, rape, neglect, and other cruelty, while very little went into the romance, which felt like an after thought.
Some of the magician content felt unbelievable, too. Irys goes straight to trying to kill Yelena, then changes direction and tries to recruit her...shouldn't have recruitment been the first of those options? And shouldn't the villains be her priority instead of a young food taster? I felt there were gaps too with the Commander and Valek's stories.
If the book had stuck to the acrobatics, tree travel, self-defense training, and friendships I would have loved it, especially if the romance had been prioritized more, but as it stands this is not a series I'll continue reading
