Based on the content warnings this books sounds horrible, but I promise it is fantastic. It is an historical fiction/romance set in the 18th Century and post-WW2 Scotland, written in the late 1980s-early 1990s so it isn’t pristine in the sense of today’s sensibilities. That said, if you’re looking for an immersive, incredibly well-researched, thoughtfully-written, and unforgettable historical romance that generally defies genre, try this out.

I started out as a fan of the show, and finally decided that I wanted to read the books. I enjoyed getting more of the backstories and smaller plot points that are naturally not going to fit into the TV show. I especially liked the parts with the brother at the Abbey that Claire opened up to about her journey. That said, there are a lot of difficult and triggering plot points. I was ready for them because I’ve seen the show, but it’s still hard to read (or listen to in my case) those things. But on the whole, I enjoyed the story.

The storytelling is amazing but HOO BOY did I forget just how probbo this story is. Very very full on homophobia and ableism from the author rather than it being part of the story.

Remembering how my friends mum gave this to us to read when we were 15 and thanking my lucky stars I never actually found a boyfriend like Jamie even though I so desperately wanted one. Domestic violence, multiple comments about “not being able to stop” or Claire just having to cope with the fact that he’s going to fuck her,

even after he is raped!!!

. Big ick from Jamie. Tv Jamie is far superior. As is tv Claire

This would be 5 stars if it weren't for the undertones of

homophobia

and lil whiffs of 

racism

here and there. Like I get that Black Jack Randall is a 

villain

  but did he really have to be an 

Evil Gay

  to trauma bond Claire and Jamie? Idk, I know this book isn't fresh as a daisy but I just can't find it in myself to give five stars and excuse a book because of "the time it was written in" and "historical accuracy". You do you, but my lil queer heart just can't do it at the moment. I watched the TV series before this and felt it there too, just in case anyone is wondering, though I doubt a lot of people are reading the book before watching the series at this point.
