This is a reread as I needed an audiobook to listen to before bed that I didn’t have to 100% focus on.

As always it’s a favorite and I love listening to Davina narrate.

I think at nearly 35 years old it should be reading modern classic status as boy does it stand the test of time!

Based on the content warnings this books sounds horrible, but I promise it is fantastic. It is an historical fiction/romance set in the 18th Century and post-WW2 Scotland, written in the late 1980s-early 1990s so it isn’t pristine in the sense of today’s sensibilities. That said, if you’re looking for an immersive, incredibly well-researched, thoughtfully-written, and unforgettable historical romance that generally defies genre, try this out.

I've watched the show for Outlander on Starz before, but this was my first time reading the book.
I was surprised how true to the plot the tv show stayed.
A few characters are different, either in appearance, or not appearing at all.

I think my favorite difference was in Claire. It always bothered me in the show how rediculously modern she was, for all she's supposed to be intelligent. Many of the moments in the show that made me roll my eyes because "why would she be that stupid" never even happen in the book.

The chapters near the end with Captain Randall were too much for me and I did skim through them. I was glad to have some warning from the show on how bad it could be.

Over all I loved the book and look forward to recommending it to friends. It was a tad long and I found myself dragging through the last 200 pages. Still, I look forward to reading the next one.

Are there a lot of content warnings? Yes. It’s historical fiction and realistic to the time, but that’s why it’s one of my top favorite books. There is so much good with this book, too. Witty, informative, strong characters, peaceful and beautiful scenes along with romance and dramatic chaos.

Definitely an interesting story, but clearly had been published in the 90s, given the portrayal of the only gay characters as predatory and sadistic. The portrayal of Romani travelers was also somewhat problematic to a modern eye, but at least they were not shown to be monolithically negative. I was personally not a fan of how the main relationship developed, as both of the characters were in turns somewhat emotionally manipulative or abusive, but it does make sense with the setting and characterization. Overall, some very unpleasant themes, but an interesting storyline. I’m curious to see how the rest of the books progress and whether there are any more diverse portrayals of queer or non-white characters.
