Are these books getting worse, or have I just gotten sick of them? The plot isn't that strong in this one, and most of the charming cast is missing. The portrayal of the Maori seems dubious. And it doesn't matter how often the words "incomparable" or "divine" are thrown around in reference to Phryne when she solves the mystery by simply hanging around until she quite literally stumbles on the solution.

I'm back with Part 3 of my Phryne Fisher book series review which includes books 15-21 AND her latest release: a short story collection! I start with Death By Water and go on from there on my BookTube channel.

Maybe 3.5. :) One of the better ones among the later books in the series.

I liked the change of setting with Miss Fisher and her companion Dot on a cruise ship as she wrangles a jewel thief out of a collection of eccentric and colorful characters.

My new favorite Phryne Fisher! Plus it's set on a cruise ship, which I really enjoy for some reason. Loved it, super fun read.

Phryne is hired by a cruise company to investigate a spate of jewel thefts. So she and Dot set out on a cruise to New Zealand where they, of course, meet a collection of interesting and unusual characters among both the crew and passengers. It kind of all gets lost at sea from here on.

This meandered a bit and seem to not know where it was heading. Then it was over. The ending was unsatisfactory to me as it lacked nice clear details and reasoning. The book didn't grab me. There was a lot of what I refer to as "I've got a secret and I'm not telling you" by the author.

Not the best of reads, especially as there were hints of something good.
