this was a liiiiiittle hard for me to get through i think because i was reading it right around finals and it is pretty technical at parts, but it also is 1000% worth a read for anyone that’s interested in observational astronomy. it’s heartfelt, it’s informative, it’s funny, and for me it’s really inspiring (especially to have met the author and to be able to connect a face with these stories)

An entertaining memoir and collected stories about modern observational astronomy. Parts of it amount to a catalogue of errors (one of which was fatal) made while using these massive instruments. I found it interesting that I have made many of these same errors myself while using my 5-inch refractor on my driveway; fortunately nothing fatal yet.

"It comes from inside; some tiny, intangible but unputoutable fire within some tiny creatures on a tiny planet drives us to reach outward and upward into the vast cosmos before us simply because we must. Why do study the universe? Why do we look at the sky and ask questions, build telescopes, travel to the very limits of our planet to answer them? Why do we stargaze? We don't know exactly why, but we must."

I enjoyed learning about what modern astronomers do. Lots of fun stories in this book, though there wasn't exactly a storyline propelling it forward (read Mike Brown's excellent book for that). This was a change of pace from my heavily political reading lately, which was nice. I liked the intersection of humanity and science.

i love hearing people ramble and talk about things they're passionate and knowledgeable about - and this book feels like one giant well-articulated ramble about astronomy and the life of an astronomer. very cool stuff

(for certain sections, it was hard for me to understand how certain telescopes/concepts looked or worked since no diagrams were provided. i don't do well with lone written explanations without visuals lol)

A beautifully written book about astronomers. Humans' quest to know is just beautiful and inspiring. I learned a lot and was entertained and inspired the whole time.
