Leckie’s plotting is usually pretty dense, which I appreciate. I’d rather be trying to puzzle things out than bored. still, it comes off a little sloppy here and there are elements that nag at me unpleasantly. for example, I don’t for one second believe that the murderer is who the novel says it is, it just doesn’t make much sense! and after the incredible use of first-person in the Ancillary trilogy I found myself unimpressed with the third-person perspective on Ingray as a protagonist. I never connected to her or felt like I could tell you anything about her as a person. what are her traits? would I like her? I went the whole book and never found out.

still, the world-building is marvelous and it’s interesting to see the universe from a vantage point outside of the Radch. there is also a bit where an alien ambassador delivers a long monologue about her motivations for doing something and it’s the sort of passage that normally signals bad story-telling but in Leckie’s hands it’s a beautiful attempt by a non-human to explain something inexplicably intimate. I came close to tears. Leckie’s mid is still good!

Good but nowhere near the first series.

A smaller, more intimate story set in the same universe, but in a different civilisation/region of space, with its own cultural norms and issues.

Will stick with it, and actually feel better about the book a little after finishing than when i was reading it.

This was my favorite book in the last 2 months. It’s by an incredible Sci-Fi author that I’m just getting into, and the worlds she’s created are really fun. This book is about this girl who comes from a planet where it’s common for the upper class to adopt foster children and then, when they’re all grown, pass on their fortunes to one, so in the meantime all of the foster kids are competing for the parents favor. The main character in this novel tries to impress her mom with this pretty bold move and basically chaos ensues. The only thing that’s tricky about this book is that there are more pronouns than we have in English, so you have to pay close attention to be sure about who is being described, but I think that makes this book pretty unique!
slow-paced

This was so repetitive. Definitely didn't grip me like the Radch trilogy, and I had to push through to finish it.
