There are some flaws, a few things that don't get sufficiently explained (i.e. why really does Tic stick around and become so invested?). But Ingray is compelling, and the world that is set up, while in the same galaxy as Leckie's early Radch books is novel and fascinating to exploring. There were other directions that I wished Leckie would have gone (such is the fantastic world building), but the way she took it produced a satisfying story.

Ingray needs to secure her future and decides the best way to do this is to break someone out compassionate release, something that's never happened before.  Nothing goes as planned though and she spends the rest of the book making things up on the fly.
This was very entertaining, it definitely made me feel like I was back in the world of the Radch, where as Translation State did not, this had the same atmosphere and stress that was missing in the other book, of the two I'd recommend this one higher.

this was almost as good as translation state, and i was shocked by that because i never see anyone talk about this book. it is criminally underrated! i don't think it's the best entry point into the imperial radch universe, but i would eat up ten more novels like this by ann leckie. she has such a talent for worldbuilding in a way that is neither intimidating for anyone new to the universe, nor repetitive for those who are familiar with it. she is also really good at crafting a found family that anyone would be invested in, and i loved all the characters in this. the way themes such as corruption and family were tackled was also amazing.

I really enjoyed exploring more of the Radch universe that Leckie had created and interacting more with different human cultures as well as new aliens. It was also really interesting to read a perspective that wasn't an AI in this universe. If I had to give one criticism to Leckie and this book in particular is that I always feel that the romances are undeveloped. I know that the book is mostly focused on plot but I never understand why specific characters get together over others, and often I feel that the romantic interests are positioned off to the side of the plot only coming in occasionally so I'm not as interested in. In the Ancillary trilogy I attributed this to the main character being essentially asexual but the same thing persisted here. Maybe it is because it is a different culture where romance functions differently but I still wish that the narrative had managed to make me feel as excited about that aspect as the rest of the plot.
