Okay, I'm adding a science fiction shelf to my Good Reads. Enjoyed this book set in the Ancillary Justice universe.

Well ummmm it was a book. Loved the worldbuilding, which keeps me hopeful about Leckie's other series set in the same world.

On some level it's my fault, because I expected a more epic tale, but everything happens for the most part within a very tight time window. I felt like there were no stakes, and I found Ingray painfully boring as a main character -- although I respect her at least having some characteristics and not being a complete cardboard cutout, like most female characters in SFF.

(reread. probably rating up slightly because it's Ann Leckie, not necessarily on the quality of the book, but here we are)
Ann Leckie does such a good job 1) creating unique alien species, and 2) portraying them in a very relatable way even though they're utterly inhuman. And she also does a masterful job showing the breadth of human experience in different worlds/societies.

I think this society was fascinating for a deep dive. Their focus on vestiges (ticket-stub-esque artifacts of an event) provided the cultural backdrop for some serious drama, which was fun. But Ingray wasn't a main character that I particularly enjoyed. She was too convinced of her own lack of self-worth to make for an engaging main character. And unfortunately, reading this right after the Imperial Radch trilogy invites unfavorable comparisons of Ingray to Breq. Ingray is such a teenage human, and so naive and bad at politicking, that it's almost painful to watch her attempt to make political moves.

But as a whole, the world and the characters were enjoyable. And the mentions of the conclave are great for people craving any update on the situation as we left it in Ancillary Mercy.
