Not my top Ann Leckie book but a solid 3.5. It became a little hard to keep track of the sides, and our heroine was sorta simplistic. But, a good story that had me hooked.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, but being outside radch space was very confusing. Still, great dynamics and interesting politics.

Ingray is a lovely character; she thinks of herself as a slow person, which means that her thinking is explicitly shown and so even though she is smarter than I am, I still can track what is going on. I love that she’s known for panicking and then coming up with a plan. Gerrald Ket was delightful in how much e didn’t actually share, and I would have loved to dig more into eir anxiety with eir parents and how e felt about eir new connections.
Like Translation State, the final 3/4th point dragged, as the climax action slowed the pace way down, spending tons of time working through each step of the action when what I wanted was the moments with her family and friends, more of that emotional resonance. Her brother could have been scarier too, to be honest. He felt like a threat for only a few of the scenes, and after that he was a grudging but committed ally.

I did enjoy this book, I actually listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was excellent! I just had a bit of a hard time following some of the storyline and background. I felt very much like I was starting in the middle of a story without realizing it. Seeing other reviews, it seems like Provenance is part of a series, so I plan on investing that more.
I think the character development was one of the strongest parts of this book for me, and I will definitely read more Ann Leslie.

Ann Leckie always creates compelling characters and societal dynamics. Her weakness is in building tension to a climax. She managed to do it well in Ancillary Mercy, but then stumbled again in this book. Still, I liked the characters and was interested in seeing how the story played out, even if it was somewhat predictable.
