lovely little audiobook reminding me of the beautiful things we have and, unfortunately, what we have to lose. i enjoyed that these essays covered a natural habitat that is most familiar to me. animals and plants i've seen personally in my daily life; not ones i've had to google/go out of my way to find. it makes the potential loss feel much more urgent.
i'm making this book sound like it was just catastrophizing about what's to come, but in reality that was maybe 15% of the book's content. Margaret Renkl has an exquisite way of romanticizing what i've taken for granted. these short little essays illuminated the blessings around me.
on the one hand, i wish i'd read the print version so i could see the illustrations, but on the other, the author's sweet country voice sold this audiobook all the more. all the more is sooo weird to use in a sentence. feels fake! anyway the book was short and fast enough for me to go for seconds and grab a printed copy :)

a journey through a year in nature, intertwining themes of loss and change and life. it didn’t change my life, but it gave me things to think about, and will make me see the world around me a little differently! tldr: weeds are just plants that you decided you don’t want, insects provide life.

The focus on nature was enjoyable ad informative but the addition of the political environment we currently face as a country was too much. If you do not feel the same way as the author you may take offense to what she has written.
A beautiful and raw discovery of one woman's perspective on her personal natural world. Touching and calm.
