This book was just so beautifully written, while listening to it in audiobook format I would get nervous about missing some of the beauty, so every time I played it, I would start by backing up an entire essay or two, to relisten to them. The format was a nostalgic one, too. As someone who grew up really religious, I spent most of my childhood reading a devotional first thing in the morning. It was really nice to be able to have this kind of format with a book about the natural world. It felt really soulful. This was the kind of book I just really wanted to savor. It was packed full of truth, and sometimes those truths landed like familiar joys in my mind and sometimes they landed like little griefs that are relieved to finally be named. Thanks to Margaret Renkl, I also participated in the New Year's bird challenge. My first bird of the year was the Blue Rock Thrush.

I enjoyed this book overall and found many little nuggets that I’ve highlighted that brought me such joy at little details in nature. I do have to say that the author’s own views about how we treat the world, though valid and true, could be a little “much” sometimes but you have to take it with a grain of salt considering what you’re reading. This would be really fun to read week by week through the year, or revisit seasonally.

I listened to the audio, read by the author, and really enjoyed it. This was wonderful to listen to during naps and after our son went to bed. It was so peaceful. Parts were funny, other sad, many parts hopeful… I’ve never read something like this, but I’d recommend if you are interested in nature and conservation.

Loved these essays about nature. Made me want to get outside & notice more.

All I can say about this book is that my mom and I wrote parody chapters after reading a few of her stories, and my parody appeared almost word for word in one of her later chapters (Spring Week 10)

Such a beautiful selection of essays about nature and ourselves. It makes me ache for what we are losing, but also makes me more aware of what is around me. Great winter book.
