Lovely, meditative book on the nature around us and the passing of time and seasons. I really resonated with the winter section (it currently being winter when I read it) and not as much with others. If you have the patience to read the book one week at a time, it could be fun to follow along throughout the year with the matching chapters.

I work at a bookstore and shortly before the holidays, a customer came in raving about this book. They bought six copies to give as gifts. It has also been on our best sellers wall. I was curious about the fuss and borrowed the audio version from my local library.
Wow. I was absolutely blown away by Renkl's gorgeous writing and candid thoughts on wildlife and her own role in the world. There is so much to unpack with this book. It's set up to take the reader through the seasons and can be read over the course of a year in this manner, which would probably be a lovely way to tackle it. I think reading it could almost be a meditative exercise. That said, I devoured the audio book in less than a day. It was just stunning.
This was my first time reading Renkl and I will absolutely seek out her other works. Also, she narrates the audio book and has the most lovely southern accent.

There's a really lovely quality to the writing of this series of essays. It's an interesting series of observations spurred on by the natural activities in the author's backyard. I definitely enjoyed some of the sections more than others, but I liked things overall.

This book is written well. I guess it just did not hold my interest as much as I would have liked. The idea was good but in my opinion I would like more description of the wildlife. It has short chapters so it was easy to pick up and read during short breaks.
A beautiful collection of 52 essays, one for each week of the year (and beautifully illustrated by the author’s brother).
This book was a much needed reminder that beauty is literally right outside my front door, if I would be slow and awake enough to see it.
I love this, because I’d also add that this mindfulness leads to a groundedness that allows me to better engage in the larger world, with all of its other stuff, its hard and its sorrows, which can’t be ignored.
