The audiobook is a fantastic version of the story. I would argue it is the best way to experience the story.  You will find yourself rooting for the main character throughout all the trials and periods of growth. The beauty and pain of remembering beginnings, endings, tragedies, and love are intertwined as surely as the water around their people. Remembering is painful and a lot to shoulder alone.

This novella reframes and provides a fantastical interpretation of what happened to the unborn babies of African women as they were forcefully taken from their homes in slave ships to exploit them. This atrocious moment in history is reimagined in such a lyrical and poetic way, while also being nonetheless extremely critical with white supremacy and the exploitation of black people. The combination of both aspects and the influence of African culture, create an emotional tale which maintains a special rhythm and conection with nature, especifically the sea and its power, that touches the reader deeply. The story focuses on history, but also love, community, shared generational grief, loneliness, hatred... A masterpiece.

I really enjoyed this novella. Rivers Solomon writes in such an immersive way that I found this novella to give me both space to process the importance of the story while also being deeply engaged in the world that had been created.
I wanted more of Basha's story and history - some of me wished that time had been a more central component. But, alas, I think we were only given snippets for good reason.
This is definitely  heavy story that asks the reader to reflect and question the way in which they think about history. Very glad to have read it.

This is not a book I know how to review. It's so unique in both content and concept that I have no idea how to talk about it to someone who hasn't read it. I was fascinated the entire time. The audiobook (read by Daveed Diggs) was fantastic. I have also read Rivers Solomon's book An Unkindness of Ghosts. I would say that this book is a less... difficult? somewhat easier to stomach?... than An Unkindness of Ghosts, but is equally unflinching in it's treatment of heavy topics.
