I found this book not only incredibly interesting (such an unusual and creative base, and yet also so immediately immersive) but lovely and also painful.

Yetu's pain with her life and her people is telegraphed clearly, and it drew me in to her hopelessness, anger, and eventual grasp at escape - and yet the story also twines the reader into how Yetu is so badly torn even

when she does escape the fate that has been killing her

As I read more and got even further wound up in the story - both Yetu's and of all the wajinru, I truly desperately wanted a happy ending, but also dreaded where the ending would actually take me.

I was, in the end, delighted with the perhaps-not-perfect but incredible resolution that managed to remove the torturous worst from Yetu as Historian . . . and to bring Oori with her, never to be left behind again.

Yetu est l'Historienne de son peuple : elle est la dépositrice de leur mémoire pour leur épargner le traumatisme des souvenirs. Car Yetu est une Wajinru, descendante des femmes africaines réduites en esclavage et jetées par-dessus-bord, enceintes. L'océan a sauvé leurs enfants et ceux-ci, devenus sirènes, ont élu domicile dans les abysses. L'histoire s'ouvre au moment de la Cérémonie annuelle du Don, lorsque l'Historienne partage pendant quelques jours sa mémoire avec les autres Wajinrus qui, s'ils n'ont pas oublié leur passé, n'en subissent pas le poids chaque jour de leur vie.
Rivers Solomon compose un chant de résistance entre lamentation, colère et révolte. C'est un texte très puissant, porté par la voix de Yetu, et bien sûr difficile par les thèmes qu'il aborde. Par le biais de la fantasy, Solomon dessine le traumatisme intergénérationnel subi par les Noir.e.s depuis des générations. Le hasard a voulu que je regarde peu de temps avant la série Watchmen, dont un épisode magistral traite également ce sujet.

Amazing premise but the execution didn't engage me. The nonlinearity of the storytelling didn't feel like it was deployed to help heighten the tension or deepen my emotional connections. It felt like a lot of world building that didn't have a smooth place to fit into the story.
