I have a hard time books that are one long metaphor for a thing, but this was a really lovely atmospheric read with a very interesting use of mermaid lore. I like the craft that went into this book, the tone, the lore, and the overall message of trauma needing to be shared as a burden and discussed openly so it doesn't cause more harm.

This novella reframes and provides a fantastical interpretation of what happened to the unborn babies of African women as they were forcefully taken from their homes in slave ships to exploit them. This atrocious moment in history is reimagined in such a lyrical and poetic way, while also being nonetheless extremely critical with white supremacy and the exploitation of black people. The combination of both aspects and the influence of African culture, create an emotional tale which maintains a special rhythm and conection with nature, especifically the sea and its power, that touches the reader deeply. The story focuses on history, but also love, community, shared generational grief, loneliness, hatred... A masterpiece.

i loved every inch of this book. my one complaint is the alternating pov’s don’t become clear until further into them, leaving the story a bit muddied in the meantime.

I had heard a lot of praise for this one so I’m glad I finally picked it up. I love inspired fantasy tales and this one is such a powerful tale mixing real historical trauma with fantastical creatures. I had no idea that this is, in a way, part of a series – the author has taken inspiration from a song about this idea by a band who were themselves inspired by another band! It’s a great collaborative work in the end.

It’s a heavy book as the blurb suggests but while it dives into that trauma (a pun to lighten the mood), it does so in a balanced way and it’s a beautiful reflection on what it means to be human at the same time.
