It fades to black, which they should have to tell you up front.

This is difficult for me. If this was my first read from an Indian author, my takeaway about Indian culture would be about its conservatism, nagging aunties, and I'd also be able to name several dishes.

However,  this isn't my first book centered around Desi culture. I love (and highly recommend) Sonali Dev, Sara Desai, and Nisha Sharma. Overall, I was a little disappointed at how negatively Indian culture is portrayed at times.

So on to the plot:

Liya Thakkar is a successful biochemical engineer, happily defying conservative Indian traditions. Jay Shah, is a lawyer, and dedicated brother and son, holding on tightly to his grief. After a terrible first meeting, they begin working together.

In a classic hate to love, with an arranged marriage twist we follow these main characters as they navigate working together and confronting their pasts. Both characters bring their trauma to how they interpret each other's actions, which leads to some good banter, but some extremely frustrating scenes.

My other issue is that both Liya and Jay are both kind of unlikable. Liya is obsessed with material things and mentions her Louboutins and other expensive accessories (along with the price) many times.

Jay can be sweet and protective, but low key somewhat of a misogynist. He was surprised she could cook because she was a feminist, disregards Liya's boundaries,
forces her almost rapist to buy her flowers and apologize… bruh why should that man be around her? 😤
and blamed her for wanting to go to Dallas for her DREAM JOB.  And his gift? No, just no, but also her reaction was also a big no for me.

I liked the female friendships & Shah family were fantastic. Mama Shah might seriously be my favorite character in the whole book.

what can I say about this book? this was the first time reading a book where South Asians were the maim characters specifically Hindu gujarati therefore I felt like i could really relate to it. it was incredibly great to read about things I could specifically relate to such as traditions and beliefs so I felt a lot more connected to the characters than ever. I strongly felt a connection towards Liya as she has the same view as me on marriage and children within an Indian household and wider society. I just hope one day I would would able to experience this type of love in real life because this book was truly beautiful.

Content Warnings: Verbal/emotional/physical abuse, sexism, fire, injury and death by fire, trauma, grief, sexual assault, and mention of attempted rape of a minor and racism.

Don’t be fooled by the cartoon cover this book deals with a lot of heavy topics like the sexual assault and attempted rape of a minor, a minor that is shamed and blamed for the assault and labeled “unclean and loose” not only by their community but also by a parent. We also see the lifetime of grief someone faces when they blame the tragic death of a loved one on themselves.

Liya has been told, from a young age, that she’s dirty and shouldn’t expect any nice guys to want her. Focusing on her career, and enjoying life, Liya is determined to never fall prey to the whims of men again. Though her parents know she doesn’t want to marry they still go behind her back to invite a potential suitor to dinner. What other option than fleeing dinner does she have?

Jay doesn’t believe he deserves a happy ever after and is determined to never marry. Blaming himself for the tragic death of his father, when he was a child, Jay does whatever he can to help his brother and mother be happy. Even though he has no plans to marry…Jay can’t turn his mother down when she asks him to meet a potential bride. Why did said match flee their dinner like demons were chasing her? If she didn’t want to meet she could have said so instead of embarrassing his poor mother who now worries they somehow offended Liya before even meeting her.

We get instant enemies over a misunderstanding, then forced proximity when they find out Jay’s the lawyer that’s been hired to help Liya’s company, and then a slow burn as they realize maybe the other isn’t so bad after all. I adored this couple and was cheering for them from the start. If you love romance’s that deal with heavier topics but prefer FTB [fade to black, aka when sex takes place off-page rather than on-page] I highly recommend giving this debut romance a chance.

solid 4!! it was good and i enjoyed it! i think the ending was a little too Rom Com-y for me but all in all i really enjoyed reading the additional cultural aspect of the book!! i always really enjoy when novels have an added culture/religion that isnt just white. it makes it so much more interesting and fun to be able to be apart of that.

it’s always a joy reading a strong female lead! i loved reading jay just slowly falling for her. i wish jay would’ve gotten a little more resolve with his issues but i appreciated the one night with liya he had. that was very sweet. they just fit.

the mentions of sexual assault, harassment, abuse and death were a little heavy throughout the book and could be triggering for some people though and i felt it was important to mention. it was also mentioned in an author’s note before the book started too. i don’t think it was written graphicly or too lightly but it can be hard to read sometimes.
