This cover might make you think you are getting a light little romcom, but there is so much more going on between the covers.

The Trouble with Hating You is about a Southeastern Asian couple navigating their religious community, expectations of friends and family, and religious trauma. It was very heavy at times.

- Enemies to Lovers
- Religious communities
- Purity culture

The one thing that I wish was that the characters did decide to take legal action against the predator. I know each situation is different, but I think in an ideal world, that character wouldn't just have been dealt with quietly after everything came out. Especially when individuals like that in religious communities could potentially continue victimizing children.

While this book did have its cute moments, the
deep misogyny of Liya’s father, Ravi, and Mukesh
was hard to ignore. The
sexual assault was also really graphic, and I was SO. ANGRY. at the men in Liya’s life who fundamentally failed her.
But all in all, it was really interesting exploring another culture and its traditions.

Definitely hands down one of my most favorite books I have read in a long time. This book has a firm place in my heart and I adore it so deeply.

It fades to black, which they should have to tell you up front.

This book caused Emotions™️. One of the most satisfying book endings I’ve read. Probably the most satisfying ending possible for someone who has survived SA. The conclusion for the parallel plot was just as satisfying as the conclusion for the romance. Liya is such a fantastically independent woman I was afraid that a HEA for the romance would quash that, and I am happy to report it did not. Jay is one of the most responsible and considerate book boyfriends I’ve read.

Check trigger warnings! There are some super heavy themes here, personally, I think they were all handled responsibly and with care.

This isn’t a great escapism book, or it wasn’t for me, just because of how emotionally heavy parts of it can be a lot. While I wouldn’t call it great for escapism it hits the spot in a whole other delightful way. Still has that big romance HEA, just with a kick-ass bit of social justice on the side.
