I'm really sad to rate this book so low because I genuinely enjoyed the first 75% of it! It was going to be a very solid 4, but the last 25% just... really ruined it for me.
I love the novel's tone, i love the style in which it's written. Thiago is a really sympathetic character and I found myself rooting for him early on. I like the novel's exploration of grief and the "weird" horror vibes. It felt like watching a really tense horror movie, something artsy and "elevated".
It really started to lose me
after Diane's death
and it never won me back. It feels like the novel should've ended a lot sooner, and the ending was just... disappointing. Bleak, but not even in a way that feels deserving. It just feels like it ends with no real resolution, and it really soured the overall enjoyment I was feeling previously.

My mind is still trying to catch up to the ending! Holy shit!!

Disregarding how this book ends and how much horrifying stuff happens I can see myself rereading it often for its beautiful and melancholy narration. It somehow, despite all the horror elements, is a cozy and thoughtful book?
I love all the conversations and how they are written.
This will be on my mind for a very long time.

⭐️: 3/5

  • The first 10% really just feels like a story about love and loss. However, the mention of “cold spot“ at 11% makes me wonder what actually killed her…
  • Ok so overall, this book was a little bit of a let down. The storyline of “the Amazon Alexa killed her” made me unable to take the rest of the book seriously
  • Definitely some scary parts at the end, like the thing chasing his car as he drives to Colorado

A desolate horror full of grief and loneliness. I cried, but I enjoyed reading this so much.

3.5-4*?? I don’t even know how to rate this because I have no idea if I actually understood what was happening or not. All I know is that I had a good time reading and it was super creepy for what it was. This is definitely one I’d love to reread and dissect.
