The writing in this book was exquisite - I’ve very rarely seen such beautiful prose like this with quote I’d love to look back on depicting love and all elements of it. Unfortunately, the story didn’t grip me as much as I’d hoped and there were times I unfortunately just couldn’t really stand it (maybe that was the intention?). It was such a shame because I’d heard so many things about it from so many people, but unfortunately I won’t be putting this at the top of my list.

It’s made me more intrigued to watch the film but not too much else. Definitely one for some people but just not for me.

This is another case of me admiring a book more than actually enjoying it. This will sound like a negative review, at odds with the four stars I am giving it. The author is obviously very talented and his writing very poetic. For that reason alone I would recommend this book. Elio's story is captivating. Young heartache can stay with you for a life time, as this shows. And the author does a good job captivating this.

But for me, this is another case of enough is enough. And then too much. Even though this is a short volume, the story was dragged out to the point of breaking. Angst overload. One of my pet peeves of late are books that just don't know when to end. I watched the film adaptation of this book years ago, a rare case of me seeing a film before the book it was based on. The ending of the film stays with me to this day. It had far more resonance than the ending of the book. I had actually planned to read the follow up novel. I'm now uncertain I need to know more.

I haven’t decided how I feel about this book. The writing was beautiful. The story was as well. I think what’s keeping me from giving it 4 or 5 stars was the wordiness of it all. But overall I liked it and I’ll most likely increase my rating tomorrow.
