4 1/2 stars: The characters felt very authentic and the situations were presented honestly. It's a hard story to write and often hard to read, but a good reality check for most people in the country.

Why it didn't get 5 stars? Oddly enough, I felt like most of the characters followed stereotypes. The thugs, the "wigger", the blonde "racist", the black kids who are cool just by default. While these things are stereotypes for a reason, I think challenging these stereotypes would have strengthened her message and left less open for criticism.

I also wanted a little more editorial on the looting, property destruction and violence towards cops that was present in the story. While Starr throwing the gas canister back at the cops was a powerful moment, it is unrealistic that she didn't face justifiable criminal charges for this action.

I got a copy of this book for my daughter, but decided to read it myself. I think this is a great YA book. What I really loved about this book is the relationship Starr has with her family. They talk to each other and are extremely supportive.
A very relevant story!

This book should absolutely be required reading for all. I highly recommend the audio version: Bahni Turpin's performance was nothing short of incredible, and added so much to the story.

3.25/5 a meaningful read. I can see why the majority of people rated this book 5 stars. It reaches beyond the story and definitely becomes the significant symbol of equality matter. It also helps me understand racial problems in America. But when it comes to the book itself, I found it a little hard to stay focused on the story and it’s wayyy too long. There are many unnecessary details that made me so bored sometimes I ended up skimming a bit. If this book is written as adult literary fiction instead of young adult fiction I would love it much more.

”What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?”

I seriously cannot believe it took me three years to pick this book up. I’m sad I didn’t do it sooner.

This a game changer book. It’s been a while since I’ve seen such a big phenomenon as The Hate U Give, and I guess it makes sense considering how much it stands out… just by the fact that it tells it how it is.

I don’t know what it’s like to be a black teenager in America. And yet this book made me feel for its characters and rage against the injustices they were facing. I guess it came out at exactly the right time. It let me and other hundreds of thousands people see how unfair the world we live in is.

I’m not going to get into what I usually talk about in my reviews, like writing style, plot and character development because this book is so much more than all of that. The Hate U Give is about it’s message and nothing else. It seems kind of shallow to me to start dissecting it with the intention of bringing up stuff that it wasn’t trying to do.

Something I do want to mention is how much I loved the family dynamics on this book. They felt so real to me… well, most of this book felt very real to me.

I honestly don’t know what else to say. Everyone should pick this book up.

This was my first ever audiobook, and I didn't regret purchasing it. It was good and brutal, but definitely honest.

I've never read anything like it! It made me want to read more books that involve people of color/diversity.
