I had no idea this was a short story. So when a tiny little book I could knock out in a half hour showed up, I was kind of disappointed. Still, a good story. Clever. Would've liked more of it, though!
Entertaining, dark, quick short story. Whets the appetite for more original stories from Flynn. Worth the few dollars for the kindle edition, not the higher price for the hardback.

"I didn't stop giving hand jobs because I wasn't good at it."
From the first line this short story will grab your attention and then leave you thinking about it for much longer than it takes to read it.
The main character has to stop giving hand jobs for health reasons so she makes the jump to reading auras. Here she meets Susan who is struggling in her home that seems to have a dark presence (or just a sociopathic stepson). The ending is clever and will leave you wondering (and ready to chat about) what in the heck just happened.
Another memorable line:
"To me, it's a nice day's work when you make a lot of people smile. I know that sounds too earnest, but it's true. I mean, I would rather be a librarian, but I worry about the job security. Books may be temporary; dicks are forever."
Update: Jesse read it and said "I legitimately have goosebumps. You were right, best story I've read in a while." YES! He said those words. I am an awesome wife.

My only complaint is that I wish this story could have been longer.
I struggled with rating this story between 3 and 4 stars. If I were able to pick half stars, I think I would rate this more of a 3.5, rather than 4. Gillian Flynn’s writing truly captivates me and this specific story had me hooked real hard for the first half. The first half had so much of Flynn’s quirk and the plot felt strong to me, until the last bit came. I understand that this wasn’t meant to be anything other than a short story but after thinking about it, the ending left me wishing there was more to it. I enjoy how it was left up to interpretation, however at the same time I feel like the twists in the last 10-15 pages could’ve been stronger. Though, it is fun to think over the twists, and try to decide what truly happened, if Miles is actually a trustworthy character or not. I love Flynn, so I would definitely read this again and analyze it deeper next time.
Short, spooky read in the tradition of Turn of the Screw.
Decent short story in the psychological horror genre, presented as a stand-alone book. Easy to read in an hour or two. Interesting, but not particularly horrific.
