I'm actually a little disappointed because from what i remember this was my favorite book in the discovery of witches series because i loved the time travel, but now re reading it, it’s not as good as i once thought (just to preface, this book is still amazing, but doesn’t live up to my memory if that makes sense). Im going to break this review into all the different parts of the book because everytime they left a different place in 1590, there were different characters and different matthews (LOLLLLL, love him with my whole heart, dont play about my man, matthew and diana FOREVER).
When they first got to 1590 they went to the old lodge, besides matthew and diana obviously, the only really memorable characters were kit (he’s the most annoying man alive, hes a daemon though), henry (very much giving gentle giant, deaf, but very good at lip reading, has a lisp (i did growing up as well so not too much on him), and gallowglass (hues son, matthews nephew, one of my favorite de clairmonts, i seriously love this man, like can i have him). There first order of business was to find a witch to teach diana magic, matthew (now roydon) calls on widow beaton (snitch ass bitch) which sets off a chain of events, becasue matthew is actually from the 1500s, the matthew that was there vanished and now his father phillipe thinks hes dead, so he summons him. This was also paired with widow beaten telling the church so now diana is being accused of being a witch so more reason for matthew and diana to leave the old lodge.
Now matthew and diana are in sept-tour (where they current live, but yk in the 1500s), matthew has a complicated relationship with his father (he had to kill him because the nazi’s captured him so he feels really guilty), we also find out that matthew and diana are not really considered married so they have to sleep apart (i was so annoyed when phillipe did this but it’s okay), also i just wanted to mention here that the reason gallowglass didnt go to france with them because he doesnt forgive phillipe for having something to do with he’s death (his father). We also find out that matthew has blood rage here (from ysabeau). To sum everything up, phillipe makes diana his blood sworn daughter, diana and matthew get married (and sleep together for the first time, hahaha), matthew really processes lucas and his first wifes death, he gets to see his father one last time, also another witch comes to teach diana magic but he tries to steal her thoughts and she kills him (girlbosssss).
Now they go back to london because the witches are looking for them (they just cant escape this shit) and they finally find a witch to teach diana magic forreal!!! (goody alsop is a baddie), diana is a weaver and can weave her own spells, this is also how her and matthew can conceive, she gets pregnant but ends up having a miscarriage. I think this was the longest part of the book, so many things happened, diana became friends with mary (henrys wife), and adopted jack and annie, (they got annie from hubbard (hes a weirdo but hey) and she led them to susanna (her aunt) which led then to goody goody), also diana find out that matthew was a spy for the queen, she trys to call diana to court, but someone uses their favor so diana can go with matthew to prague, they escape once again (HAHAHA).
Now their in prague and the emperor was being a complete weirdo trying to get with diana, also i think this was the first time matthew drank from dianas heart vein but i cant remember, this is also where they find ashmole 782 and kelley rips out the 3 pages, they find out that the whole book is made of vampire, daemon, and witch blood, skin, and all sorts of dna. We also found out that matthew was apart of the congregation (big shock).
Now they are back in london and the only things really important in this section was matthew continuing to spy for the queen and kit and louisa (matthews sister with blood rage) capturing diana. I dont think i mentioned it, but kit was literally in love with matthew and it was so weird, so they targeted diana because of that, but diana ate them up so it doesnt even matter. Matthew ate them up so bad, he was so mad at louisa and kit, like you guys are really pathetic. We also see in this part stephen (diana’s dad) which was nice because he was time walking, so it was nice to see a reunion between them. Also i would like to mention her that because diana was phillipe blood sworn daughter, that helped them get out of a lot of trouble, because hubbard was being so annoying omg.
Now last part, diana gets pregnant with twins, emily ends up dying, margaret (witch, that was born of two daemons, who was born of a witch (at least sophie was)). Looking back on this review, i loved this book more than when i originally finished re reading. I dont know why i remember diana time walking multiple places but hey, also we find put about benjamin in this book and hes a big plot point in the next book! Phoebe is introduced and with marcus, and shakespeare is annoying omg (hahaha).

I found this book quite a slow read, compared to the first one. It takes roughly half of the book to get to the magic and the main story points from the first one, which I struggled with a bit. It is however, very cleverly written, easy to read and you can tell the author clearly loves her history.

Of the three, this book is the best. I love the time travel, living in 1591, the inclusion of real historical references. Beyond that it feels a little like drawn out Hermione Granger x ancient Edward Cullen fan-fiction.

Neat OutlanderxTwilight fanfic.
No but fr I LOVE the “we’re going back in time and have to be super casual about it and not change anything” plot drive. I don’t know a thing about 1500’s Europe except for name recognition, but the book felt like a very impressive show of mastery of the time period’s history, as well as spinning it all up for our preternatural intrigue.
Somehow listened to the entire book in one day, cannot guarantee I will remember a single plot point in a week. Had a good time.
