The Girl Who Cried Monster by R.L. Stine

Okay, admittedly I was getting a bit bored and rolling my eyes in the beginning. Then, towards the middle, I got more invested and had all of these theories about the monster. But, that twist? I was NOT expecting that at all, and it made the book for me. Seriously. I loved this book solely for that twist. It was a goofy ending that had me snorting because of the dialog, but my jaw dropped when it first got revealed.

If this is a clue as to how the rest of my reads through Goosebumps is going to go, I'm so very excited. I got wary in the beginning after Welcome to Dead House and then several fails, but now? The writing is getting more solid (for a middle grade book) and the twisty endings are getting better. On to the next one!

This is more of an overall review of the series, really. When I was a kid, I used to devour these books, but sadly I'd recently somehow managed to forget all about them. I was reminded, however, when I rediscovered this awesome blog: http://www.bloggerbeware.com. These books are a mixture of varying degrees of terrible and amazing - at the same time. I honestly find it really hard to rate them, seeing as they're such a major part of my reading foundation. 11 year-old me would probably have given all of them 5 stars, but alas, I'm no longer 11 years old. In acknowledgement of my young self and the wonderful kitschiness of the series, I've decided on 4 stars. Also, they vary a lot in quality, but seeing as it's been so long since I've read them, I don't remember which ones were best. 4 stars it is.

My 8-yr old son and I have recently taken to reading the Goosebumps series together. This is the second book we've read, after Chicken, Chicken. I did not read the series when I was a kid, despite its popularity, but I am happy that my child has an appreciation for this kid-friendly, horror/suspense series.

The novel follows the basic premise of the old tale, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." Lucy has a fascination with monster stories and she employs them to her benefit to scare her younger brother. However, she tells them so often that people are tired of her shtick. When Lucy encounters a real-life monster, the local librarian who mutates and transforms into a bug-eating, amphibian-munching monster, no one believes her.

Of course, R.L. Stine has a reputation for his surprises and twist-endings, so I cannot give away what happens at the end of the book. The conclusion is satisfactory and Stine does not tip his hand.

Overall, this book was entertaining. Stine uses the end of the chapter to keep the reader in suspense. When it was time for bed, my son would beg for more. The writing was stilted at times and I found myself stumbling over the phrasing in a few places; it could be smoother, but it does not detract from the book.
