My expectations were pretty low starting this one, I have to admit. Pleasantly surprised. Learned a bit about strip mining in the mountains and horrified by what I read. John Grisham may turn me into a Liberal yet. :) He changed my mind on the death penalty after reading Innocent Man.

If you need a reason to hate energy companies, specifically coal companies, this book is a good place to start. Good story and pacing. I enjoyed the book and, as with most Grisham books, picked up some things as well.

This was a very disappointing read. The environmental stuff was actually quite interesting, but the novel itself, not so much. The main character is a complete zero, and to think we would care about her mother and her roommate and her former coworkers when we don’t even care about her is laughable. Add that to the fact that there is absolutely no suspense and virtually no plot, and you have the opposite of a page turner. I could barely finish this and had to skim to do it.

I found the mining pieces really interesting, and enjoyed the plot there. However, I was rather disappointed to see that Mr. Grisham seems to think that in 2008 a person could be fired for having a single wage garnishment against them (federal law has prohibited this for some time), and that he believes that this sort of garnishment can account for more than 25% of someone's wages (it cannot). This feels like a rather large problem to me, especially when so much of a subplot revolved around someone being fired under these circumstances. I also felt the ending rather rushed.

I listened to this on audio. The beginning of the book was interesting. I liked Samantha and was intrigued when she traveled up to the mountains. Loved meeting Romey along her route. Felt he was funny and wanted to know more about him. Then we met Donovan and I started to like him but then a plot twist happened and the story went down hill. Jeff appeared and it just wasn't the same. I felt pretty bored with the mining and mountain talk. Ending was a bit lame. I had to listen to it twice because I felt I missed something. However, I do tap myself on the back for completing this and not dnfing it. Sorry just disappointed in this one.

the main character questioned everything in life and seemed like too much of a goodie goodie but overall i thought this was a page turner. reading about coal mining is horrifying and im sure if i read up on it i would be devastated. i thought it was the most interesting part of the book though.
