This one has been in my TBR pile for a long time.  I’m not sure what my hesitation was to dive in, it has all of the elements that I like: family drama, trauma, coming of age, a story that spans decades. I knew it was going to destroy me, and maybe I had to be in the right frame of mind.  I saw some ridiculous reviews where people claimed the author wrote this book to make white Americans feel good about themselves.  I’m still trying to figure that one out.  It’s the same kind of nonsense that came from “American Dirt,” where folks felt the author was not qualified to write the story. First of all, Khlaed Hosseini is Afghan by birth and lived there during his childhood in the 1970s.  He wrote about the Afghani experience.  Second of all, people can write a novel about whatever the hell they want, and thinking they cannot is called CENSORSHIP.  But I digress.

As predicted, this book got me straight in the feels.  I was so emotionally attached to these characters, their flaws, their pain, their secrets.  There were a few times where I just had to stop reading and stare at a blank wall for awhile, a tell-tale sign that this is my kind of book. It was beautiful, painful, devastating and hopeful all at once. My only regret is that I took so long to read it.
