Bought this in the charity shop. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, however it was a bit of a silly book.

When shopping for graphic novels, I had a whole collection that I was interested in. However, as they're so expensive, I could only purchase two. The first being the second Giant Days volume and the second being this volume.
I had heard things about the others I picked up but I chose this one over them - I really wish I hadn't.

The reason I chose this is because of the artwork and the fact I hadn't heard anything about it. The artwork is amazing and the vibrant colours are great. What isn't so great is the execution of this graphic novel.
There was no plot. Honestly, I was the most confused I have ever been. When reading a graphic novel, I want to fly by with ease and enjoy the light and fun experience. I don't want to have to force my way through one and not know what on earth is happening. Normally I devour graphic novels in one sitting, however, this took me two days!

The plot was all over the place, changing quickly from scene to scene without much, if any, explanation. Characters would appear in random places all of a sudden. There seemed to be no links and I really didn't understand what was happening or what was the main 'goal'/'point' of the story.

The characters were executed poorly too, with little complexity. The main character was rather irritable and came out of nowhere. She is portrayed as a 'fangirl' of the Gods and falls in love with a male God at first sight *rolls eyes*. There wasn't much of an introduction to the main character who we follow throughout the entire graphic novel. I also don't know how she's connected to the Gods/how she knew about them...there isn't really a backstory.
The Gods were just as confusing as the plot. Apart from Lucifer, who was executed well, the others were not. There were no backstories to the Gods and they were not introduced. Throughout the story, I had no idea who the main character was talking about. She kept spewing names of different Gods and all I could think was "Who is that?!"
Most of the Gods were not introduced until the very end and I still have no idea who is who and what is what!

I think the premise (A bunch of immortal Gods who incarnate as humans and die after two years?) seems very interesting. However, the execution was poor. It seemed as though the authors just threw a bunch of characters (the Gods) into a volume and made them do random stuff. I really didn't understand anything. I don't know what I have read...I'm so confused. I won't be picking up the second volume.

Let me be clear---the artwork is wonderful, and is excellent throughout. The story, or at least the premise/idea behind the story, is interesting. Unfortunately, I didn't connect with the characters at all. Whether it's the main protagonist who is a groupie/wannabe god, or the gods themselves, I didn't care about any of them. The gods all act like shallow, spoiled celebrities. The story was also difficult to follow. I won't continue with this series.

Love the concept, the art, the character designs and personalities...this was a gorgeous comic, but the plot wasn't so great. It very much felt like am opening act rather than a full story.

Fingers crossed things improve in the later volumes! I'd definitely keep reading, I really want to see where they take the concept.

this graphic novel is very strange. it has a bizarre, albeit intriguing story, mildly interesting but mostly annoying characters, and an erratic narration style. That being said. I'd read it again just because of how visually engaging it is. I've heard good things about vol. 2, so we'll see if the characters and story manage to catch up to the artwork.

Loved it. Violent and smart and unexpected and oh! That art!

I'm about half way through The Wicked and The Divine. It's basically American God's... if the Gods were pop stars. I loved American God's... maybe that's why I like this so much? I can't put my finger on it. I will say that it's an unbelievably beautiful, easy to read meditation on death and celebrity. It hasn't changed my life, but while I wait for Saga's next book it's 100% worth reading on the subway.
